117 YOUNG MEN ATTEND MIDDLETOWN'S
"GYM RAT" BASKETBALL CAMP

Middletown High School was the site of the four-day "Gym Rat" Boys Basketball Camp. A total of 117 young men participated in the camp, which was held July 5 - 8 and was sponsored by the MHS Sports Boosters.

The main objectives of the camp were to help young players entering grades 2-9 develop their individual skills and to provide them with many opportunities to improve during competitive games.  Campers participated in daily skill development stations, 3-on-3 games, free throw shooting competitions, Hot Spot shooting contests, and 5-on-5 games. No trophies were presented because the camp staff has decided to encourage youngsters to participate "simply for the love of playing the game" and not for material awards. All campers received a camp t-shirt, certificate of participation, and motivational packet.

MHS graduates John Keimig, Michael Oursler, and Morgan Winn were league commissioners and assisted in the overall organization of the camp.  All three played for the Knights and went on to compete in college basketball, along with counselor Alex Carr.  Keimig (UNC - Pembroke), Oursler (York College), Winn (Shenandoah University), and Carr (Eastern Nazarene University) were outstanding role models for the campers.

High school student-athletes who served as counselors at the camp were rising seniors Ken Bartlett, Logan Beckner, Conner Mills, Michael Pritts, John Remsburg, and Ethan Winn; rising juniors Jack Panther, Ben Racz and Brian Schumm; and rising sophomores Ben Panther, Bradley Rinehart, and Mitch Sgrignoli.

"It was an action-packed week of camp," said MHS varsity head coach and camp director Aaron White, who was assisted by coaches Chris Hopson and Tim Leber.  "We really appreciate the enthusiasm of the counselors and the effort and sportsmanship of the campers."
