Coach Engle began teaching and coaching at MHS in the fall of 1967.

Forty-eight years ago in 1967, I was given the opportunity to lead the Middletown High School boys' basketball program as head coach.  For 22 years, our players and coaches, with tremendous support from parents and administrators, worked tirelessly to build a tradition of excellence within our basketball program.

Since my retirement in 1989, coaches Barry Blickenstaff, Tim Leber, Jon Jarrett, and Aaron White have carried on that tradition and have taken the program to even greater heights.  I continue to be proud of the MHS boys' basketball program and its many accomplishments.  I wish our coaches and players continued success.

Sincerely,
Ron Engle

RON ENGLE CLASSIC

The first Ron Engle Classic was held at Middletown High in December of 1998, and the 12th event in honor of the Knights’ former coach and athletic director was held in 2009.  Coach Engle took over as Middletown’s head basketball coach in 1967 and led the Knights to 337 victories and four trips to the state playoffs at the University of Maryland during his 22-year helm.  He served as the school’s athletic director for 29 years before retiring from Frederick County Public Schools in 1996.  Since his retirement, Coach Engle has coached in the MHS girls basketball program and helped the Knights win the Maryland Class 2A state championship in 2006.
